Recently, the number of electrical applications in automotive systems has increased rapidly. The demand on these new electrical auxiliary systems suggests that this development will continue in the foreseeable future. At the moment, a major concern of the automotive technology is active safety and accident avoidance systems. This, however, demands ever increasing requirements of the electrical supply systems. This paper focuses on electrical stability control, where an actuator design is investigated by means of finite element (FE) software. A novel approach within the 2D FE analysis is utilized to model the linear tubular permanent magnet actuator compared to conventional axisymmetrical models, which provides a method to separately analyze the contribution of the stator teeth and end-effect to the total cogging force.
